A good wine comes from a good grape, and this in turn has its origins in the vineyards.  Viña Undurraga has placed special emphasis on this last aspect, developing its agricultural activity in different estates dedicated exclusively to the cultivation and production of the finest grapes.

The estates have a total surface area of close to 1,200 hectares and are located in the Maipo, Colchagua, and San Antonio (Leyda) valleys, all with optimum characteristics for the production of wine grapes.

Maipo Valley
CODIGUA ESTATE / SANTA ANA ESTATE
Viña Undurraga has two estates in this Valley: the Santa Ana Estate, located in the heart of the Maipo Valley, in the county of Talagante, 34 km from Santiago, with a surface area of 140 hectares.  The soils are alluvial in origin, with medium textures, clayey but rocky, sandy, well-drained, flat terrain with far-reaching depths and moderate fertility, where the vineyards reach a natural balance.
The other estate, Codigua Estate, is located in the county of Melipilla, 70 km from Santiago and 30 km from the sea.  It has a surface area of 250 hectares and because of its proximity to the Pacific Coast, it produces a magnificent white grape for Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc, as well as an excellent Pinot Noir.

Colchagua Valley
EL HUIQUE ESTATE / COLCHAGUA ESTATE
Irrigated by the Tinguiririca River, the Colchagua and El Huique estates are located in the Colchagua Valley and have surface areas of 200 and 400 hectares, respectively.  Unlike the Maipo Valley estates, these have sedimentary soils with medium textures and are loamy to loamy-clayey and well-drained.  The terrain is flat, deep, and fertile.  They are in a climate with higher temperatures, which makes them particularly appropriate for growing red varieties: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Carménère.

San Antonio Valley (Leyda)
LEYDA STATE
This estate is characterized by an incredibly attractive landscape with rolling hills, with a vantage point where it is possible to see both the sea and the Andes Mountains at the same time.
Its soils are loamy-clayey with an average depth that lends a nice quality to the wines.  The climate is the principal characteristic in this estate due to its 14 km distance from the sea, an influence that translates into a cold climate with fog almost year-round, achieving a slow ripening of the grapes, especially towards the end of the season, thus preserving the finest characteristics of Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir, and Chardonnay.

In its vineyard plantations, Undurraga uses the traditional trellis system and the California trellis system with plantation densities of 2,800 to 3,400 plants per hectare.  These conduction systems guarantee a good exposure of the clusters, helping to ripen healthy grapes with a good sugar content, which ensures an adequate percent of alcohol and optimum quality.  Grapes are hand-harvested between February and May of each year.
